Are you up for it? You’re invited to witness a new blog: Susan Goldberg from SGES co-launched a new blog, The Wonderland Odyssey. It is being used in conjunction with the co-authoring of a business book, “The Wonderland Odyssey, Turning Leadership on its Hat” by Susan and Rebecca Lacy from Pinnacle Management Group. Susan and Rebecca met through a mutual contact via linkedin and have been working on the book for a year. What started out as sharing business experiences and giving support in the consulting professions (executive search consulting and training) became a discovery of mutual passions, views, compatible personality traits and values. One of the results of this relationship, besides making business introductions and offering leads, was a driving force to write a book. The work is an unconventional business book from two unconventional business consultants: one in New York City, the other in the countryside of St. Louis. It is a business book for anyone who wants to learn about leadership, running and managing a business, entrepreneurialism, working with others, selfknowledge, self assessment, and personal development, but can’t abide reading any business book from cover to cover because it never holds your interest. Want something different? You can read about, follow and join the whole experience on the blog: http://wonderlandodyssey.com/

From the previous clues, “pay attention to the key words on the home page” and “an organization that fits with our message and branding”, which non-profit would you have chosen for SGES to support? With any familiarity with our company, or one read through of our website, this one would have been at the top of your list. SGES is thrilled to announce the support of our new non-profit of choice : Lighthouse, officially Lighthouse International.
Lighthouse, a non-profit that is based in Manhattan, was started by two women, whose mission was to help the blind. Since that time, the organization has grown substantially to offer a full range of services aimed at improving the quality of life for people who have low vision and blindness.
Lighthouse was an appealling choice because its headquarters was in our hometown, it was started by women and it focused all its work on sight, a recurring theme related to our work and our brand. SGES pledges to support the organization financially, also hoping to spread the word about the wonderful organization so that its marketing and its services can reach more people. You can read additional information about Lighthouse by visiting its website, www.lighthouse.org and learn more about SGES view about giving back and its dedication to Lighthouse by visiting the “giving back” section of our website: www.susangoldbergsearch.com/givingback.php . You can also follow Lighthouse on Twitter at @lighthouseintl and at Facebook at Lighthouse International. We hope you will help us support this wonderful non-profit.

The editor of the women’s newsletter, “Woman Around Town” which is distributed to a subscriber based in New York City and Washington DC, asked Susan to write an article detailing why Greg Smith’s very public resignation from Goldman Sachs is not the right career move for most people. Timing is everything, so while the subject of the public resignation was being hashed and rehashed in the media, the article demanded a quick turnaround. Since Susan felt passionate about the lessons learned from this very public “airing of views”, she wrote fast and furious, after listening to or reading views from such varied sources as “Real Time with Bill Maher”, the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, and tumblr blogs. Here is the result of her rapid typing. It was suggested that a number in the title (hence, a list) and in the content of the story would guarantee that the content could be organized, read and digested in an instant. The article was published in today’s “Woman Around Town”. You can view the article at www.womanaroundtown.com or via the direct link: http://www.womanaroundtown.com/sections/living-around/5-reasons-not-to-resign-publicly

Susan Goldberg was interviewed for the career portion of the article and offers some suggestions for those who are currently employed and those who are looking for work. Susan of SGES, recommends considering smaller companies, freshening your skills, and if you are employed, be ready to receive a counteroffer from your current company. SGES has not decided upon the new charity choice to sponsor as quickly as we had hoped. The non-profits that we were looking at seem to lack the passion we could get excited about: the initial quick turnaround of information and interest dwindled as soon as it had appeared. We are still searching for a worthwhile organization that fits with our message and branding. If you have suggestions for a non-profit, please let us know. We are open to ideas, however, having an office in New York City is preferable because of our location. Please send all suggestions to info@susangoldbergsearch.com

Pace University had its annual Fall Mini Career Coaching night on Wednesday sponsored by Dr. Barry Miller, Manager Alumni Career Programs and Services. SGES was invited to attend as a professional coaching and executive search firm. During the evening, Susan found she was giving the most advice to people who were employed but were looking to transition into another field. The one assumption that they all were making was that they were at a disadvantage because they didn’t have much, if any, experience in the industry they were considering. Their attitude of fear and doubt dissipated into an alternative mindset of confidence and determination after speaking with Susan from SGES for a few minutes. “The best part of the evening was watching faces move from apprehension into smiles. Repositioning their thought process and assumptions were what these people needed and weren’t receiving from friends, colleagues or other coaches. It helps when I can talk from my own experience: having changed fields a couple of times and also having executed searches in a wide variety of industries.” It was a very satisfying experience for Susan to be able to give back to the university where she attended the graduate program in business and received her MBA. We hope that the people Susan met will be able to reinvigorate their job searches with a positive spin which will be a great push toward them achieving their desired results. We welcome feedback from Pace Alums.

SGES and the www.susangoldbergsearch.com website is changing, which started in March of this year. Our latest change will be our choice for the non-profit we chose to support. The previous local charity will be replaced in the month of December, once Susan has interviewed the potential non-profits to choose which one goes best with our brand identity, and has determined which organization will most appreciate and benefit from our support. We decided to retire our affiliation with our original choice, which had been in place for two years, and move on as it became clear that our support was not making the difference we thought it would. It was the right time to help another worthwhile cause. What will the cause be? What will the organization look like? Please “stay tuned” for our update, and, meanwhile we’ll give you a clue: look closely at key words on the homepage of our website.

One of the contributors to the well-known women and technology blog site, webgrrls international, spoke with Susan Goldberg of SGES about her current job search. Maria Botta, the blogger, was so appreciative of Susan’s advice that she asked Susan if she could offer some general job search tips that Maria would then post in her upcoming blog entry, “My Job Search or The Art of War”. Susan’s 5 Tips are included in that blog which was published within “webgrrls wisdom” on October 21. To view the blog, please visit http://t.co/WINPp9zx
