“5 Reasons Not to Resign Publicly” published

The editor of the women’s newsletter, “Woman Around Town” which is distributed to a subscriber based in New York City and Washington DC, asked Susan to write an article detailing why Greg Smith’s very public resignation from Goldman Sachs is not the right career move for most people. Timing is everything, so while the subject of the public resignation was being hashed and rehashed in the media, the article demanded a quick turnaround. Since Susan felt passionate about the lessons learned from this very public “airing of views”, she wrote fast and furious, after listening to or reading views from such varied sources as “Real Time with Bill Maher”, the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, and tumblr blogs. Here is the result of her rapid typing. It was suggested that a number in the title (hence, a list) and in the content of the story would guarantee that the content could be organized, read and digested in an instant. Still on the Look Out

SGES has not decided upon the new charity choice to sponsor as quickly as we had hoped. The non-profits that we were looking at seem to lack the passion we could get excited about: the initial quick turnaround of information and interest dwindled as soon as it had appeared. We are still searching for a worthwhile organization that fits with our message and branding. If you have suggestions for a non-profit, please let us know. Pace Alum Coaching: Positive Repositioning

Pace University had its annual Fall Mini Career Coaching night on Wednesday sponsored by Dr. Barry Miller, Manager Alumni Career Programs and Services. SGES was invited to attend as a professional coaching and executive search firm. During the evening, Susan found she was giving the most advice to people who were employed but were looking to transition into another field. The one assumption that they all were making was that they were at a disadvantage because they didn’t have much, if any, experience in the industry they were considering. Their attitude of fear and doubt dissipated into an alternative mindset of confidence and determination after speaking with Susan from SGES for a few minutes. “The best part of the evening was watching faces move from apprehension into smiles. Repositioning their thought process and assumptions were what these people needed and weren’t receiving from friends, colleagues or other coaches. It helps when I can talk from my own experience: having changed fields a couple of times and also having executed searches in a wide variety of industries.” It was a very satisfying experience for Susan to be able to give back to the university where she attended the graduate program in business and received her MBA. We hope that the people Susan met will be able to reinvigorate their job searches with a positive spin which will be a great push toward them achieving their desired results. Looking at a New Charity

SGES and the www.susangoldbergsearch.com website is changing, which started in March of this year. Our latest change will be our choice for the non-profit we chose to support. The previous local charity will be replaced in the month of December, once Susan has interviewed the potential non-profits to choose which one goes best with our brand identity, and has determined which organization will most appreciate and benefit from our support. We decided to retire our affiliation with our original choice, which had been in place for two years, and move on as it became clear that our support was not making the difference we thought it would. It was the right time to help another worthwhile cause. What will the cause be? What will the organization look like? Please “stay tuned” for our update, and, meanwhile we’ll give you a clue: look closely at key words on the homepage of our website.

Static No More

Earlier in the year, the company website for SGES was revamped. It has undergone additional changes today. The homepage now includes a photo stream of Susan Goldberg, the founder and principal, shot during the course of a Wednesday. The stream replaces a static image of her similar to the one in the “who” section of the site, www.susangoldbergsearch.com . We worked with both our graphic designer, Cristian Fleming, of The Public Society team (www.thepublicsociety.com), and the package deal of Jade Dressler, from Plant Agency (www.plantagency.com) and Alvaro (Al) Montagna, from Small Earth VC (www.smallearthvc.com).

Cristian and Susan worked on the idea for the photo streaming while she was formulating the updated branding for the firm. Then, Al captured the core energy of the Susan Goldberg Executive Search brand in the candid photo shots of Susan while she was working. Susan wanted the photographs to ”show me functioning naturally during the progression of a day”. The objective was to catch her at varied times, doing and thinking different things. “I work with people who are multi-dimensional real people, who are not just resumes. I want people viewing the site to understand I am a real person too, not a posed image of a person”. We welcome your feedback to let us know if we accomplished our goal. Profile: Turnaround CEO with a twist, a new breed of Super Hero

Anna Prata, or “Prata” to some of her friends and fans, a turnaround executive and potential winter Olympic athlete, was interviewed by Susan Goldberg for the weekly journal, “Woman Around Town”. The article is entitled, “The New Female Super Hero” and a new breed of super hero, she is. The driven executive has taken on the sport of skeleton; a sliding sport that uses the same track as bobsled and luge, but it is the head first version of the three. She competes against people half her age. Anna views her challenges in the sport similarly to her position as interim CEO when she is brought into a company to turn the company around and make it successful again: you have to remain calm under extreme pressure, have confidence in your decisions, speed and precision are critical, intensity and focus are demanded, you must always trust yourself and the head leads first are some of the similarities. Susan, was inspired by Anna’s special story, and the message it could send to many. The small female daredevil sled driver is a force to be reckoned with. SGES Seminars at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business

Susan Goldberg presented two seminars this week at Pace University’s business school in downtown Manhattan. Sponsored by the Career Services department with the help of Dr. Barry Miller, Ms. Maxine Sugarman and Ms. Genevieve Chorhummel, Susan addressed two different audiences on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Monday’s audience was comprised of Lubin MBA alumni while Wednesday’s seminar instructed current students attending the undergraduate and graduate programs. The alumni program content included information on how to work successfully with recruiters. The student program focused on interviewing skills including how to respond to particularly difficult questions and situations. Audience participation was a key ingredient for both seminars so that the programs could be beneficial for the individual attendees. The programs were well attended. Individual attendees praised the helpfulness of the seminars. A comment from one of the alumni attendees follows:

“Thanks for an informative and well done presentation last night. Despite 20+ years in human resources, I picked up so many new ideas. The seminar was so helpful and I think the people sitting around me got a lot out of them, too.” Barbara D

“Why” SGES Website Revamped

SGES reworked, reworded, and repositioned the company website, www.susangoldbergsearch.com ( www.sgesconsulting.com), to be consistent with all marketing and sales. The homepage, our purpose, who, news, sges retained search, Hiring 101 pages: all have been updated. There will be other changes in the next few months including the giving back page, and a couple of graphics/visuals. It become important for us at SGES to have a more unique brand that better reflects who we are and would attract like minds to the way we conduct our business and what we stand for as a company: an alternative approach to leadership, a direct honest style, a personal touch, embracing the idea of giving back, environmentally friendly, and open-minded. It’s also a reminder that our business is all about putting people first (not transactions, procedures, technology or accounting).

Special thanks to Simon Sinek for his speech and book, “Start with Why” which was the catalyst for the motivation behind the enhanced marketing efforts.
