Looking at a New Charity

SGES and the www.susangoldbergsearch.com website is changing, which started in March of this year. Our latest change will be our choice for the non-profit we chose to support. The previous local charity will be replaced in the month of December, once Susan has interviewed the potential non-profits to choose which one goes best with our brand identity, and has determined which organization will most appreciate and benefit from our support. We decided to retire our affiliation with our original choice, which had been in place for two years, and move on as it became clear that our support was not making the difference we thought it would. It was the right time to help another worthwhile cause. What will the cause be? What will the organization look like? Please “stay tuned” for our update, and, meanwhile we’ll give you a clue: look closely at key words on the homepage of our website.

SGES offers Mini-Sessions at Pace University’s Career Coaching Event

On Monday, November 1st, 2010, SGES will be participating in this fall’s career coaching clinic, at Pace University in downtown Manhattan. The event will be hosted and sponsored by Pace University’s Career Services specifically Dr. Barry Miller and Ms. Stephanie Elson. There will be two sessions, one for bachelor degree recipients and one for MBA degree recipients. The clinic is free and available to recent graduates and alumni. The brevity of the sessions allows for one or two questions per graduate and questions are those which can be responded to within a short timeframe. Questions in the past have included: how to respond to specific interview questions, how to rework a resume, how to conduct a job search in many industries at once, how to increase the odds of a successful job search, and is it realistic to pursue a particular industry given a person’s specific work experience and level of contacts. “Discovering and Repositioning Your Skills for a New Market” workshop and conference calls

June 16th, SGES presented a workshop at Carlisle Collection’s Manhattan showroom targeting professional women who were planning a career change in the near term or within the next few years. The specific workshop was part of the event, “Trying It on For Size”, which included three separate presentations, networking, and refreshments. Providing the atmosphere of a traditional salon for gathering and sharing ideas, the workshop including handouts, a sample exercise, and then targeted exercises for the attendees to break into groups of 2 for informational feedback, with additional time for questions and findings. Follow-up conference calls took place on Wednesday, June 30 and Thursday, July 1 to discuss suggested research each attendee accomplished on their own time, and specific career coaching questions that emerged from the attendee’s involvement in the workshop. There was consensus that the workshop was successful and inspiring for the women. As a result, all participants communicated an increased determination to pursue their new career goals and many mentioned an increase in their confidence level as well. There has been interest by professional women in other areas of the country for the workshop to be offered outside the New York area, but nothing has been planned yet.

The article written for this week’s addition of “Woman Around Town” addresses two life changing events: getting married and changing one’s job. The title “Change is Good: Are You The Bride or the Cellphone” incorporates the two topics discussed in the article: planning a wedding while not jeopardizing your job, and, when and why to consider a job change. The wedding topic was part of the week’s special edition devoted to June weddings. The job change topic was a response to a reader who asked, “why interview, if your job isn’t broken”. It includes a list of reasons to change jobs despite the fact that the current job may be adequate. The cellphone is used as an analogy that refers to an individual and their career and is explained in the piece. As a follow up to the “Interviewing Secrets” presentation given at Carole Hyatt’s networking salon, Susan Goldberg wrote an article for “Woman Around Town” focused on the specific topic of the changing trend in interview questions. “Latest Trends in Interview Questions – The “It” Factor is the “Fit” Factor” was published in this week’s “Woman Around Town”. SGES cited in Forbes.com article “Don’t Get Stumped In The Interview: The New NEW Interview Questions”

Susan Goldberg and her retained executive search and career coaching firm were mentioned in the most recent edition of Forbes.com in an article about interviewing. The information was drawn from the “Secrets of Interviewing” presentation which Susan had presented at Carole Hyatt’s Salon for networking on March 24, 2010 (see earlier news item), and from a telephone interview and subsequent email exchanges between the journalist and SGES’ Owner and Principal. It appeared from the interview and email exchanges, that what had most interested the journalist, who was in attendance the evening of the presentation, were the specific examples of recent trends in interviewing questions that Susan detailed at the end of the presentation. Those examples were a combination of interviewing questions which Susan, herself, had used for particular retained search clients who were trying to determine the potential employee fit for their organization along with those questions which she gathered from discussions with a sample of cutting-edge small business owners for the same purpose. SGES participating in Pace University’s Coaching Clinic
