NY Small Business Owner Roundtables

Wednesday, March 1st, 2017

Version 3

Susan of Susan Goldberg Leadership Consulting, formerly Susan Goldberg Executive Search, led two roundtables at the New York National Association of Women Business Owners small business Bootcamp, entitled, “Leading in Wonderland”.  The description of those sessions, “What does great leadership look like in today’s economy?  We’ll talk about that and tips on how to better manage your organization in a new, unprecedented business environment that has no rules.”

Using topics and lessons culled from the first few chapters of Susan’s book, “Leadership in Wonderland”, bringing them into real world anecdotes from working with her clients, and then having the small business owners who attended sharing their own experiences and questions, was rewarding for all of us.  The themes we covered were accepting change as a given, the effects of gossip on a company overall  (its leadership and entire staff), and when to ask for and accept help as a leader/CEO.   The presidents who attended, admitted that asking for help was the most difficult lesson they had learned.  However, they also acknowledged having a board, mentor, and/or coach were seen to be one of the most beneficial things a business owner or senior executive can do for themselves.

One of the attendees wrote an appreciative review after the roundtable.  Thank you, Lena!  Here is her email:

Hi Susan,

Thanks so much for your message! I had an immense joy speaking with you and learning about leadership aspects outlined in your book. I found them unique and challenging. It was great having a one on one discussion; I felt that I really got to connect with your ideas.

As for my expectations, your workshop has exceeded them! Not only you covered a new type of leaders (younger generation) but also went in depth challenging sensitive topics like accepting change and communication.

Our discussion has brought up a couple of recent situations that I had on my mind regarding reaching out for help, ‘gossip’ and connecting with my team. Thank you for putting my mind at ease 🙂 Sometimes it helps even just to talk those things through to overcome a mental block that you’re dealing with.

Weekend in Manhattan was a ton of fun! Hopefully, it won’t be long before I’m back in the city 🙂

Have a great week!

Lena

The Interviewer is Interviewed

With the digital version of our book, “Leadership in Wonderland” available on Amazon and with the paperback version recently being listed on Amazon and on our website, www.leadershipinwonderland.com, the tables were turned on us.  For once, Susan, who usually does interviewing on behalf of her clients, became the focal point of an interview herself, when the members of the AESC, the Association of Executive Search Consultants, Global Marketing and Communications department,  became curious about the book.   How did the book come about? What’s so important about embracing change?  Can leadership groups benefit from reading and discussing this together?  All this would be answered in a question and answer.  That Q&A was published in the AESC’s Bluesteps blog on January 5, 2017.  You can read it at:  https://www.bluesteps.com/blog/leadership-wonderland  or on our blog at www.leadershipinwonderland.com

Living a Childhood Dream

Tuesday, July 26th, 2016

Front Cover 5 x 9

Have you ever had a dream as a child that you wanted to fulfill so much that it stayed with you as you got older? Perhaps you wanted to produce a film, act on Broadway, curate an art exhibit?  Or maybe you wanted to be responsible for saving a life, setting an athletic world record, or creating something that enhances a number of people’s lives?  They’re all wonderful.

I’m Susan Goldberg .  I’ve always wanted to be an author.  I even had a pen name chosen.  Years passed,  my life became more practical.  I had two careers, the current one kept me very busy and fulfilled and I felt good about all the companies and individuals I have helped  in my business, but I wasn’t an author.  Time went by.  I wondered if I would ever see a glimpse of that dream become a reality.  It only had to be one book.

July 18, 2016 the kindle version of my book was released (the paperback will launch in early Fall).  And, what made it even better is that I had a co-author, Rebecca Lacy, who helped make it happen.  In fact, because she rekindled that spark and challenged me that we could do this, that we did.  We worked together seamlessly, with one voice, and with much joy.

“Leadership in Wonderland”,  available on Amazon Kindle is a work of fiction with a workbook attached.  The book was written for young professionals, first time entrepreneurs, creatives and other non-traditional leaders to discover or reinforce your leadership strengths and be alerted to the things you were never taught but it was assumed you knew .   It involves self-evaluation, problem solving and coming to terms with preconceived notions and biases you may not be aware that you hold.  But the book is also for the dreamer who lives in all of us.   Perhaps not a coincidence that the main character in “Leadership in Wonderland”, Alice, drawn from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” was also a dreamer.  Hmmmm.

Got a dream?  It will never go away until you make it real.  Come on, take that first step.
