High School Offerings for Alumni?

The Harvard Club in New York City hosted an alumni function, however, not for former students of Harvard, but for former students of Newark Academy preparatory school in Livingston, New Jersey. Harvard University was founded in 1636, while Newark Academy (NA) was founded a good 138 years later.  Yet, the same questions confound the two schools alumni relations departments and career offices: what services to offer alumni for networking, career development and hiring besides just the social events. And how to insure a diversity of attendees?

On January 7th,  while college attendees were still home from school break and college grads in the working world were slowly getting back to the normal pace of work post-holidays,  NA hosted an alumni function for networking and career development – cocktails preceded by a presentation by fellow alumnus, Susan Goldberg, founder of Susan Goldberg Executive Search Consulting, SGES. Susan was honored to be chosen by the Director of Alumni Relations, Evan Nisenson to be the speaker that evening.

Susan led both a presentation and interactive discussion on “How to Stand Out” during a job search, pitch or interview; career resources; and networking tips.  It was a very social and fun evening, including an exchange of information on overcoming obstacles, which all attendees took part in.

Adding Value for Your Clients

What added value do you bring to your clients? 

Susan offers examples of services that she has provided to clients above and beyond the recruitment and placement of a candidate.  Why?  As a consulting partner Susan wants to be able to add value, which is what clients expect from a retained search firm, and what makes it different from a contingency firm or an internal staffing department.  It also explains why the firm limits its search projects to a maximum of four consulting assignments at any one time.

Most recently, for example,

 For a media client she:

  • Kept them from making a hiring mistake on a potential candidate who the client was looking at for an alternative position,  (not the original position the candidate had interviewed for), who Susan knew wasn’t “up to” the position and confirmed that suspicion through reference checking.
  • Garnered outside legal advice for a client as a specialist legal opinion
  • Made introductions to industry leaders who were not candidates but could possibly bring business to the client and industry insight as to the next trends and ideas arising in the marketplace.
  • Found qualified and desirable candidates in a week’s time

For a private equity client she:

  • Made introductions to people who had potential new investment deals, some could be deemed possible candidates in the near or long term
  • Make introductions for well connected professionals, who were not potential candidates,  who could steer the client toward possible investment deals

Is retained executive search consulting all about simply filling an executive level position?  No.  If it were any internal staffing professional could make a transaction and fill a position.   Retained executive search is built upon relationships, advising, accumulating and sharing knowledge. It’s not about transactions.  A good search consultant will be a strong advocate, marketer and advisor to their clients and to the candidates.  Besides all that, most good search consultant’s nature is all about the desire to be at the forefront of making deals happen in the bigger picture of business: beyond placing the right executive for a client, other contributions may include referring contacts to create direct business relationships and business sources for leads;  advising on hiring, building an organization or team; or, negotiating a new contract for a new or continuing position.   An update on the retained executive search industry was written by Julie Bennett and published within the Marketplace section of Wednesday, October 2nd’s Wall Street Journal.   Susan of SGES was interviewed for that article.  It included additional thoughts about the industry from Susan, the President of the AESC (the industry’s association) Peter Felix, and a couple of other search consultants.  You can read it at:  https://members.aesc.org/eweb/Dynamicpage.aspx?webcode=SearchWireArticle&wps_key=f42f0d8f-0e23-42f4-9188-3fb16e3c8d2d

The Perfect Hire? Is it a Real Person or Not?

Is the typical way we find,  interview and hire the best person for a job obsolete because of social media?  Susan wrote a thoughtful response to an article in July/August’s issue of Scientific American Mind, “The Perfect Hire” which questioned the accuracy of current vetting practices in favor of using social media analysis instead .  The response was published as a blog in the Ageis newsletter compiled and circulated by L. SGES Receives Certificate of Appreciation

SGES Seminars at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business

Susan Goldberg presented two seminars this week at Pace University’s business school in downtown Manhattan.  Sponsored by the Career Services department with the help of Dr. Barry Miller, Ms. Maxine Sugarman and Ms. Genevieve Chorhummel, Susan addressed two different audiences on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  Monday’s audience was comprised of Lubin MBA alumni while Wednesday’s seminar instructed current students attending the undergraduate and graduate programs.  The alumni program content included information on how to work successfully with recruiters.  The student program focused on  interviewing skills including how to respond to particularly difficult questions and situations.  Audience participation was a key ingredient for both seminars so that the programs could be beneficial for the individual attendees.  The programs were well attended.  Individual attendees praised the helpfulness of the seminars.  A comment from one of the alumni attendees follows:

“Thanks for an informative and well done presentation last night.    Despite 20+ years in human resources, I picked up so many new ideas. The seminar was so helpful and I think the people sitting around me got a lot out of them, too.”  Barbara D

“Why” SGES Website Revamped

SGES reworked, reworded, and repositioned the company website, www.susangoldbergsearch.comwww.sgesconsulting.com),   to be consistent with all marketing and sales.  The homepage, our purpose, who, news, sges retained search, Hiring 101 pages: all have been updated.   There will be other changes in the next few months including the giving back page, and a couple of graphics/visuals.  It become important for us at SGES to have a more unique brand that better reflects who we are and would attract like minds to the way we conduct our business and what we stand for as a company: an alternative approach to leadership, a direct honest style, a personal touch,  embracing the idea of giving back,  environmentally friendly,  and open-minded.   It’s also a reminder that our business is all about putting people first  (not transactions, procedures, technology or accounting).  

Special thanks to Simon Sinek for his speech and book, “Start with Why” which was the catalyst for the motivation behind the enhanced marketing efforts.

SGES cited in Forbes.com article “Don’t Get Stumped In The Interview: The New NEW Interview Questions”

Susan Goldberg and her retained executive search and career coaching firm were mentioned in the most recent edition of Forbes.com in an article about interviewing.  The information was drawn  from the “Secrets of Interviewing” presentation which Susan had presented at Carole Hyatt’s Salon for networking on March 24, 2010 (see earlier news item),  and from a telephone interview and subsequent email exchanges between the journalist and SGES’ Owner and Principal.  It appeared from the interview and email exchanges, that what had most interested the journalist, who was in attendance the evening of the presentation, were the specific examples of recent trends in interviewing questions that Susan detailed at the end of the presentation.  Those examples were a combination of  interviewing questions which Susan, herself,  had used for particular retained search clients who were trying to determine the potential employee fit for their organization along with those questions which she gathered from discussions with a sample of cutting-edge small business owners for the same purpose.  The specific questions will be discussed in an upcoming article in “Woman Around Town”.   To view the complete article in Forbes.com, please click on http://www.forbes.com/2010/05/06/job-interview-questions-personality-forbes-woman-leadership-career.html.  If you are viewing this as a blog and would like to learn more about SGES, please visit www.susangoldbergsearch.com.
